Whether you’re riding the rails or catching a bus, there are many reasons to take public transit. As Bay Area residents, we are fortunate to have the accessibility, convenience and many transit options to get around throughout the region. Most people take public transit to get to and from work, school or recreation, but there are many other benefits with taking public transit, such as:

A sense of community - When you’re on public transit, you see familiar faces and you can get to know others headed in your direction. While waiting on a station platform or a bus shelter, it’s really easy to strike up a conversation and bond over transit. The sense of safety and security is elevated when you ride along with your neighbors.

Cost - Riding public transit is substantially cheaper than driving. There are many costs associated with driving that most people disregard. First, there are short-term costs like gas, tolls, parking and the chance you get into an accident. The long-term cost consists of maintenance, car insurance and taxes. Save the money and ride the line.

Environment - Mass transit has shown it is better for the environment with more people onboard a train or bus instead of single occupancy vehicles. In addition, many transit agencies are going green with battery and hydrogen fueled buses and electrified train service. Fewer emissions, cleaner air, healthier environment.

Reading/listening to a podcast/sleeping - For longer commutes (and even shorter ones) public transit offers riders the opportunity to read their latest novel, listen to that long-awaited podcast or take a quick nap as one heads home. Personally, I have done all three during my commute and that cat nap does wonders when I arrive at my destination.

Time - Sitting in traffic is a nightmare especially when you have to get to an early meeting or are headed to a concert or game. Planning ahead and taking a scheduled bus or train trip is always the best option. You save time and relieve any stress related to getting to your destination on time.

Convenience - No matter where you are going, there is a bus stop or station platform near you. The Bay Area is full of transit options and any rider can get a Clipper card to use with ease. Just tap on (and off for Caltrain and BART) for payment and get going!

Supporting your local transit agency - When riding public transit, you’re supporting thousands of people that work tirelessly to make your commute better each time. The fare you pay to board, and the tax dollars you contribute keep everyone in the Bay Area moving forward today and into the future.
