The San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors passed a resolution honoring the entire month of November as National Native American Heritage Month at its most recent meeting.
The district will use the month to reflect on Native American history and culture.
Contributions of Native Americans to our shared culture are too many to list, including the names of places across our country, contributions to art, cuisine, and popular culture, and fundamental concepts we hold central in our government including checks and balances and freedom of speech.
Statistics from the U.S. Army Reserve show that Native Americans have served in the U.S. armed forces at a per-capita rate that’s higher than any other ethnic group.
As part of the resolution, the district states that it believes every person has the freedom to feel valued and respected and condemns racism in rhetoric or action.
