SamTrans Board of Directors unanimously approved a proclamation on Wednesday declaring May to be “Older Americans Month.” A nationwide initiative first established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Older Americans Month is a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. The SamTrans Board adopted the proclamation at its meeting on Wednesday as a way of reaffirming the agency’s commitment to providing quality transit service to senior citizens in San Mateo County. The proclamation was also an opportunity to focus attention on the daily challenges facing senior citizens in San Mateo County and to reflect on measures that are being extended to assist those residents. SamTrans has long remained committed to providing reliable and accessible transportation options for older and disabled residents of the Peninsula. In the past year, SamTrans has enhanced accessibility of bus stops for the convenience of seniors, engaged the community as part of its Senior Action Mobility Plan, trained seniors on how to use bus services, and performed multiple bus demonstrations to familiarize seniors with public transit, among other accomplishments. Approximately 10 percent of SamTrans passengers are age 65 or older. Additionally, the paratransit services managed by SamTrans maintained a zero trip-denial record, despite a record-breaking increase in demand. ### About SamTrans: SamTrans operates 76 routes throughout San Mateo County.
