FROM COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT STAFF For Bus Operator Carl Cruz, the rewarding part of his job over the last three decades has been helping to drive people to get to where they need to go while being out in the community. Cruz has been driving SamTrans buses since 1985 and was recently honored by the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) Board of Directors for earning his 30-Year Safe Driver Award. Cruz also has been recognized as Operator of the Month at least four times throughout his career, with the most recent being in June 2018.

Cruz attributes his milestone achievement of being a safe driver to the SamTrans Transit Operations Training Department, transportation management, mechanics, utility workers, his fellow bus operators and his family. His advice to incoming new bus operators is, “Have a positive outlook and take care of your health. And it helps to learn from others as it will help the passengers and those around your vehicle to remain safe.” When Cruz is not on the clock, he and his wife, MaryAnn, enjoy biking, hiking and going sightseeing together.  And wherever they go, they like to explore and dine at new restaurants to add to their growing list of favorite restaurants.
