Peninsula residents on the verge of retirement can learn about the many benefits of using public transportation if they attend Friday’s Loving Life After 55 Expo in Redwood City. Representatives from SamTrans’ Senior Mobility Program will host an information booth at the exposition, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center. The SamTrans program offers free resources, training and information for older adults who might want to take advantage of comfortable, affordable and convenient public transportation. The fully trained and experienced volunteer Mobility Ambassadors will show seniors how to plan trips using public transit, and accompany them on their first trip. Ambassadors can provide information about alternatives to driving, such as community shuttles and locate driver safety classes.

The program is recruiting volunteer Ambassadors who are least 18 years of age, and older residents interested in receiving training, as well as those who would want to teach the training lessons. There will also be information on SamTrans’ Veterans Mobility Corps (VMC), a unique Vet-to-Vet initiative where military veterans teach their comrades how to use the regional public transportation system. SamTrans is currently seeking veteran volunteers to undergo VMC training so they can impart their knowledge to fellow veterans. More information about SamTrans Senior Mobility Initiative can be found online HERE. Located at 1455 Madison Avenue, the Veterans Memorial Senior Center is accessible by SamTrans Route 274, which connects the Redwood City Caltrain Station to Woodside. The Loving Life After 55 Expo is free and open to the public. For schedule and fare information or for help planning your trip, call 1-800-660-4287 (TTY 650-508-6448) or visit www.samtrans.com or www.caltrain.com.
