Transit District Offers Free Fares for Federal Employees

Beginning Thursday, January 24, the San Mateo County Transit District will provide free bus and train rides throughout its service areas to all federal government employees who are affected by the partial government shutdown.

Federal workers can ride free by showing their federal government employee identification cards to bus operators on SamTrans and to conductors on Caltrain. Free service will remain available for the duration of the government shutdown.

“We sympathize with the financial burdens that federal employees are faced with due to this unprecedented situation,” said Transit District General Manager/CEO Jim Hartnett. “These individuals provide a great public service to our region and our country, and we want to do what we can to make sure they have access to convenient public transportation options during this challenging time.”

First-time riders can visit www.samtrans.com or www.caltrain.com to learn how to plan a trip or by calling our Customer Service Center at 1-800-660-4287.
