The considerable creative talents of the Peninsula’s schoolchildren will be on display this Sunday for an exhibition of SamTrans’ Art Takes a Bus Ride program.
An annual program, the Art Takes a Bus Ride contest invites local students to submit themed artistic creations, with the winning entries displayed as a wrap on a SamTrans bus for an entire year. The winning student art also will be displayed on ad cards inside SamTrans buses. The collaborative effort between SamTrans and the San Mateo County Office of Education engages students in the classroom and emphasizes arts in the community.
On Sunday, May 1, all of the artwork submitted for the 2016 Art Takes a Bus Ride contest will be on display at the Peninsula Museum of Art. The theme for this year’s contest was Safe Routes to School, so attendees can expect to see several innovative and imaginative artistic takes on that concept. The motif came about as the result of a partnership between SamTrans and the San Mateo County Safe Routes to School Program. A panel comprised of members from the San Mateo County Arts Commission chose the winning entrants.
The exhibition will take place from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., with the winning contestants revealed at 2:30 p.m. Located at 1777 California Drive in Burlingame, the Peninsula Museum of Art is accessible by SamTrans Route ECR, which drops off passengers off at El Camino Real and Trousdale Boulevard, one block away from the institution.
The art exhibition is free for all, and attendees can RSVP by visiting the event page here.
The winning entrants will also be honored with special recognition certificates at the SamTrans Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, May 4. The board meeting begins at 2 p.m. and takes place at the SamTrans headquarters on 1250 San Carlos Avenue in San Carlos.
