San Mateo County Transit District Board Adopts Coastside Transit Study

The San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors unanimously adopted a study that is expected to improve service in Pacifica, Half Moon Bay and other coastside communities in San Mateo County.

During its regular meeting on Tuesday, the Board adopted the Coastside Transit Study. The study, which took place between April 2017 and February 2018, assessed the transit needs of the coastside and how they could be best met by expanded bus service. The District held two community meetings earlier this year, as well as two meetings in spring 2017. Based on public comments and origin/destination trip data analysis, the District developed near-term and long-term improvements that will improve mobility for coastside residents.

Some near-term recommendations have already been implemented. In January, the District adjusted SamTrans Route 118 to connect with the Daly City BART Station and added an additional evening trip for the same route.

In addition, the study calls for an information and marketing campaign on FLX service in Pacifica to ensure all potential riders understand how to make the most of the FLX service. FLX Pacifica runs along a fixed route, but can make deviations to allow for direct service within a half-mile of the route. Riders can arrange this direct service by calling 650-560-0360 up to one day in advance.

The study also makes longer term recommendations including extending the 118 bus route to Half Moon Bay or other destinations, as well as improvements at the Linda Mar park-and-ride, such as secure bike parking and better waiting areas, restrooms and other amenities. A mid-coast park-and-ride option may also be explored.

When the Draft Coastside Transit Study was presented at the May 2, 2018 Board meeting, the Board requested that staff consider additional efforts to develop specific coastside service goals and explore nontraditional transportation solutions, including microtransit. This was incorporated as an item for continued consideration and study on the coastside.

Full implementation of the Coastside Transit Study is included as an initiative in the SamTrans Business Plan currently underway.
