Everyone loves a free ride, which is why SamTrans is offering up fare-less travel on its Route ECR and Route 294 buses next Thursday in celebration of Dump the Pump Day.
For the entire service day on June 16, passengers can board for free on Route ECR, which travels along El Camino Real, and Route 294, which runs from Hillsdale to Half Moon Bay.
Backed by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), a national advocacy group, Dump the Pump Day will celebrate its 11th year of existence in 2016. The national event highlights the economic and environmental benefits of taking public transportation, and encourages commuters to get out their cars and onto transit for the day.
Representatives from Caltrain and SamTrans will also be hosting special “Energizer” stations at the Hillsdale Shopping Mall and the Redwood City Transit Center, respectively, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on June 16.
Employees will be handing out snacks, drinks, prizes and information brochures detailing SamTrans and Caltrain transit options. Both SamTrans and Caltrain are managed by the San Mateo County Transit District.

According to APTA’s latest research, public transportation use in the country annually saves 856 million hours in travel time, 450 million gallons of fuel, and $21 billion in congestion costs in 498 urban areas. Additionally, public transportation has helped reduce the nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually.
