SamTrans Designates May as Older Americans Month

May is full of celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. May is also “Older Americans Month.” In 1963, President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens designated May as Older Americans Month for the purposes of honoring the contribution of past and present seniors.

In commemoration, the SamTrans Board of Directors adopted a proclamation designating May as “Older Americans Month” during its monthly board meeting today.

As San Mateo County works to put the coronavirus (COVID-19) behind us, SamTrans is committed to providing quality service to senior citizens in the county.  SamTrans recognizes how transportation enables access to services and activities that help older Americans preserve their dignity and independence. Our services help seniors make vital trips to medical appointments, grocery stores, pharmacies and other important places.

In aiding senior mobility and independence, SamTrans has a Senior Mobility program that helps seniors unfamiliar with transit services to become educated and familiar with transit options and routes to shopping, medical appointments and entertainment.

For more information about SamTrans’ mobility program, please call 1-800-660-4287 (TTY 650-508-6448) or visit https://www.samtrans.com/riderinformation/Seniors.html.
