SamTrans and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA) are teaming up with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) to thank cyclists who pair their rides with transit during this year’s Bike to Wherever Days (BTWDs).
This Friday, May 17, there will be a SamTrans/TA/SVBC energizer station at the Millbrae Transit Center on the southbound platform from 7 to 10 a.m. At Millbrae Station, cyclists can connect with SamTrans buses, Caltrain and BART trains, all of which helps reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
"We're excited to join forces with the Bike Coalition to champion cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation," said SamTrans General Manager/CEO April Chan, who also serves as the executive director for the TA. "The energizer station at Millbrae Transit Center embodies our commitment at SamTrans to fostering a healthier, greener community while providing support and incentives for cyclists."
All SamTrans buses are equipped with bike racks on the front of the vehicle that can hold up to three bicycles. Newer racks are larger and can accommodate the wider tires found on many modern e-bikes.
The TA has $19 million available for bicycle and pedestrian projects for local jurisdictions in San Mateo County this year. The agency also recently won a major grant to improve active transportation and mobility in South San Francisco. In addition, it’s moving toward a community-selected, preferred alternative for the 1.5-mile Fashion Island Boulevard/19th Avenue Separated Bikeway project at the Highway 101/92 interchange in San Mateo.
Cyclists are encouraged to pledge to ride so they can receive a BTWDs tote bag, snacks, beverages and giveaways at the energizer station. SamTrans will also be handing out a limited number of free single-trip bus passes to cyclists who have made the pledge.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Bike to Work Day, which has since evolved into Bike to Wherever Days, a three-day celebration, spanning from Thursday, May 16, to Saturday, May 18. Individuals throughout the Bay Area are encouraged to embrace the joy of biking wherever their destination may be.
For the first time ever, cyclists can visualize the entirety of the Bay Area's energizer stations on a single map, simplifying route planning and enhancing the overall experience. Additionally, participants have the chance to win exciting prizes and swag bags, making the journey even more rewarding.
Throughout the month of May, registered riders are automatically entered into prize drawings, further incentivizing participation and reinforcing the positive impact of cycling on both individuals and the environment.

Created to administer Measure A, San Mateo County’s ½ cent sales tax, the TA provides funding for transportation projects and programs in San Mateo County. In 2004, more than 75 percent of San Mateo County voters reauthorize Measure A for an additional 25 years.
