The San Mateo County Transit District Board of Directors approved Operating and Capital Budgets for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 at its September board meeting. The adopted SamTrans Operating Budget is $209.4 million and the Capital Budget is $11.9 million.
The agency only put forward an interim budget in July due to the dramatic impact the coronavirus (COVID-19) has had on both the operations and finances of the agency. SamTrans now has a better understanding of how the pandemic is affecting both ridership and sales tax revenues, allowing the agency to put forward a complete budget.
This budget will not allow for any additional administrative hiring, or any wage increases for any SamTrans staff this fiscal year. It’s also based on the assumption that the express bus program, launched in 2019, will remain suspended through the remainder of the fiscal year. The Capital Budget seeks to maintain the fleet in a state of good repair, while also making investments in infrastructure and information technology.
Adoption of the proposed budgets is an important step along the way towards a future that provides service that is relevant, adaptable and financially sustainable.
The District’s FY2021 Operating Budget began July 1, 2020 and ends on June 30, 2021.
